Bin cages are often looked down on, but with the right materials you can build the ultimate home for your hamster without the cost of a normal retail cage. You will need a good sized storage box, following the guidelines in the cages section.
Building a Bin Cage
Drill holes in the side of your bin; use a small bit approximately 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. Go very slow so that you dont crack the plastic; drill a row of holes to give good airflow/ventilation. Don't make the holes too close together as it may crack.
Next it is time to make the lid, you will need to measure the lid (try cut out most but leave a strip in the middle to support the lid) and cut the two squares out. You will now need to fix the meshing to the lid using screws and nuts. You may want someone to help with this so that you don't injure yourself and to stop the mesh rolling up.
