No doubt you have a local pet shop that sells hamsters, but are they really the best place to buy a pet? Many of the animals come from 'mills', places where health and welfare is not important and hamsters are bred merely for profit. Unfortunately many pet shops will twist the truth on approaching the question of their hamster suppliers, a 'local breeder' does not mean a nice, open seller who cares deeply for their animals; these local breeders are usually mills and you should be wary of buying a pet. Pets can often be very wary and fearful of humans due to the lack of socialization from the store workers. Some pet shops however do have very high standards so don't rule them all out too quickly; I got my first hamster from a fantastic pet store.
